Database professionals are under constant pressure to do more with what they have, to improve performance and availability of their existing systems while minimizing new hardware and software purchases. Most Enterprise applications are complicated systems, composed of hundreds of database tables, thousands of complex multi-join SQL statements, and thousands of lines of code. These applications must perform well even as data volumes increase. As a result, the application must "know" the quickest access path to data in the database. Many database administrators determine that as application complexity rises, available cost-based optimizers will not determine the correct access path to data.

IxOptimizer is Ixion's industry-leading SQL optimization tool for Corrective Management. With IxOptimizer, database administrators work with Ixion's consultants to adjust or improve an application's performance as it grows with the business (both in data and in functionality) simply by applying a corrective methodology rather than by investing in costly software rewrites. Usually, these performance issues are associated with back-end Input/Output (I/O) operations. IxOptimizer applies a concise methodology to tune and optimize SQL statements. With IxOptimizer, we have improved the performance of application SQL by several orders of magnitude!

IxOptimizer was developed based on a wealth of knowledge gained by our own experience in tuning large complex (and often poorly-written) SQL statements. IxOptimizer was designed by Ixion to overcome the limitations inherent in other widely available SQL tuning tools. IxOptimizer will optimize SQL statements that can slow down an application once data volumes become significant. IxOptimizer can save a customer a lot of money, as it applies it's own unique methodology to actually apply "hints" that transform SQL statements without actually changing their functionality, thus avoiding costly software rewrites that would otherwise be required to fix the problem. Other available SQL tuning tools simply identify problematic SQL but do not actually take corrective action, leaving the developer or database administrator to take his/her best guess at how to structure the SQL. These types of "coding"changes require thorough testing, as it is very difficult to determine if the SQL changes the developer is making are not changing the desired functionality of the application.
